Strategies for Successful Mangrove Living Shoreline Stabilizations in Shallow Water Subtropical Estuaries

چکیده

By combatting erosion and increasing habitat, mangrove living shorelines are an effective alternative to hard-armoring in tropical subtropical areas. An experimental red shoreline was deployed within Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, using a factorial design test the impact of age, breakwater presence, placement on survival first year deployment. Mixed age treatments were included identify if seedling (11-month-old) could be enhanced by presence transitional (23-month-old) adult (35 47-month-old) mangroves. Environmental factors monitored detect possible causes mortalities. Approximately half (50.6%) mangroves died, those, 90.7% occurred annual high-water season, 88.9% showed signs flooding stress. Planting seedlings haphazardly among older did not attenuate enough wave energy significantly increase survival. Breakwaters alleviated stress through reduction water velocity height, odds 197% 437% when planted landward seaward rows, respectively. Compared seedlings, deployment increased 1087%. Collectively, our results indicate that sites with season should utilize structure woody stem.

Strategies for Successful Ageing Living Alone

The purpose of this qualitative study, conducted in Thailand, was to identify strategies for older adults to live alone happily, with dignity, security, and independence. Purposive sampling techniques were used to recruit participants from 12 provinces throughout Thailand. The sample included three groups: older Thai people living alone (n = 1,087), clinician who working with Thai older adults ...

Residual Exchange Flows in Subtropical Estuaries

Observations of residual exchange flows at the entrance to four subtropical estuaries, two of them semiarid, indicate that these flows are mainly tidally driven, as they compare favorably with theoretical patterns of tidal residual flows. In every estuary examined, the tidal behavior was that of a standing or near-standing wave, i.e., tidal elevation and tidal currents were nearly in quadrature...

A Fourier-chebyshev Collocation Method for the Shallow Water Equations including Shoreline Runup

A method for the shallow water equations governing wave motions in the nearshore environment is presented. Spatial derivatives contained in these equations are computed using spectral collocation methods. A high-order time integration scheme is used to compute the time evolution of the velocities and water surface elevation given initial conditions. The model domain extends from the shoreline t...

A Pushnet for Quantitative Sampling of Shrimp in Shallow Estuaries

The shallow estuaries and bayous of the Gulf Coast are used extensively as nursery grounds by several species of commercially important shrimp. In our studies on the estuarine phase of the life cycles of Penaeus setiferus and Penaeus u&ecus, sampling for post-larval and juvenile shrimp in the nursery areas presents a problem. The young shrimp tend to concentrate in areas of stiff salt-cord gras...

A two-dimensional ®nite element drying-wetting shallow water model for rivers and estuaries

A new ®nite element model has been developed to simulate two-dimensional free surface ̄ow in rivers and estuaries. The variables of the model are the speci®c discharge and the water level. The algorithm takes into account the natural boundaries of the ̄ow, de®ned by the contour lines of zero depth, with a new approach that accepts positive and negative values for the water depth. In this way, we...
